The label “Made in Turkey” that identifies products made in Turkey has its days numbered, as announced by the Official State Gazette. The problem is that the English spelling of the country, the most used internationally, is identical to the English term of the turkeythe popular American bird so present in Anglo-Saxon cuisine.
It seems that the Turkish authorities are tired of their country being identified with an animal so foreign to their culture, which is also so important to Americans. The Turkeythe turkey, is already a whole american icon recognized worldwide for being the center of the Thanksgiving dinner, the country’s traditional holiday par excellence.
As the German media collects Deutsche Welle, President Erdoğan has officially requested the United Nations and other international organizations to stop using the English name of the country, to replace it with Turkiye. As published by the Turkish Radio and Television Corporation (TRT), Turkey has officially approved the change, in such a way that all export products will carry the label “Made in Turkey“.
This decision was already advanced at the end of last year, when Erdogan argued that the new international term would better express the culture, civilization and values of the Turkish nation. TRT itself then admitted that any google search of the graph Turkey it threw up a huge number of results related to turkey and ways to cook it, as well as a multitude of images of the bird and Thanksgiving tables.
Tired of this association of Turkey with a native American bird, and that the American turkey is more famous throughout the world than its own country, the Turkish government hopes that soon the new term will be accepted by all international organizations and, finally, the ill-fated disappear “Made in Turkey“.
