What happened to the children lost in the jungle of Colombia?
A hundred soldiers and indigenous people with the help of sniffer dogs participated in the search for the four indigenous children who disappeared after a plane crash in the thick jungle of the Colombian Amazon on May 1.
The country was excited about a rescue that seemed miraculous when the president, Gustavo Petro, announced Wednesday that the four brothers of 13, 9 and 4 years old and the 11-month-old baby had been found alive. But the president retracted the following day and assured that this information had not yet been confirmed.
On the morning of May 1, a Cessna 206 plane from Avianline Charters’ company left a jungle area known as Araracuara bound for San José del Guaviare, one of the main cities in the Colombian Amazon.
On board were the pilot, an indigenous leader from the Huitoto community and the aboriginal Magdalena Mucutui Valencia with her four children aged 13, 9 and 4 and an 11-month-old baby.
Minutes after starting the journey of about 350 kilometers over the jungle, the captain of the aircraft reported engine problems and the plane disappeared from radar. All three adults were found dead days after the accident.
