The Judicial Police, Migration Colombia and the Air Force Intelligence group reported on the night of this Tuesday, August 24, the capture of a citizen from Syria, who apparently has been carrying out intelligence work in the vicinity of several military bases of the country. The arrest was registered in the municipality of Madrid, Cundinamarca.
According to what has been reported by the authorities, the 38-year-old spy is currently identified as Samer Al Hasanieh, and he carried a Venezuelan identity card issued in 2014 but with an expiration date of 2019. The same document indicates that it is a person of Syrian nationality who is a resident of the neighboring country, where he worked as a merchant.
Likewise, those responsible for the capture reported that the man had been collecting information on the bases of Mosquera, Funza and Madrid. “The citizen Syrian-Venezuelan He constantly frequented the perimeters of Military Units in order to obtain information of interest to him, ”reported people involved in the investigation, quoted by the Colombian newspaper El Tiempo.
So far, the authorities have not explained how they identified him, much less under what concept he is accused of carrying out espionage work in the national territory. However, the same newspaper added, they recalled that recently they were able to prevent a possible attack against President Iván Duque.
The latter based part of the operation on the purchase of properties near the El Dorado International Airport in Bogotá, in which he recalled the attack that was carried out against the president from land adjacent to the Cúcuta air terminal. It is worth noting, then, that the three municipalities in question are relatively close to the capital airport.
Similarly, the authorities have not ruled out that Al Hasanieh was in the country with other objectives such as the installation of illegal activities that would allow him to provide financing to terrorist groups.
