Folding mobiles are becoming more resistant, more practical, and cheaper. Proof of this are the two new smartphones that Motorola has announced globally; the Motorola Razr 40 and Razr 40 Ultra, and that they arrive not only to renew and improve all the weak points of the model that the company announced in 2022, but also to compete head-to-head with the well-made smartphones with flexible screens that we have seen in recent months; see Oppo Find N2 Flip.
Actually, the new Motorola Razr 40 and 40 Ultra offer much more than updated specifications or improvements to their cameras and screens. It is the first time that the company announces two folding of the same family; a flagship model with greater features in the case of the 40 Ultra, and a less vitaminized variant for a less demanding audience.
Both terminals, yes, have the task of demonstrating that they are a worthy alternative to the rest of the folding ones. His assets? A much more useful external screen if we talk about the Razr 40 Ultra and a relatively cheaper starting price than any other mobile phone with a flexible screen in the case of the Razr 40. These are precisely two points that I had been waiting for for a long time. This latest model, in fact, is one of the cheapest folding on the market, with a starting price that is below 900 euros.
There are important differences between the two Motorola Razr 40 and Razr 40 Ultra, in addition to their price, and very similar characteristics that can make you doubt which is the better option or if it really is a worthy alternative to the Oppo or Samsung foldable; the Galaxy Z Flip 4. Although these are doubts that cannot be resolved until you test both models in depth, talking about their specifications and the sensations after a first contact can be helpful to learn more about these two new devices.
This is the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra
The Motorola Razr 40 is a very interesting foldable for its price, but the smartphone that attracts the most attention in terms of design and performance, the Razr 40 Ultra. It is also the flagship of the brand, accompanying the Edge 40 Pro that in hypertextual We were able to analyze recently.
The Motorola Razr 40 Ultra inherits the format of its predecessor: a shell-type mobile whose interior screen folds vertically to considerably reduce its dimensions. It arrives, yes, with important improvements. One of them is the flexible OLED screen, which is now 6.9 inches and includes a refresh rate of 165 Hz. The most relevant? The outer panel, which it is now 3.6 inches and includes a refresh rate of 144 Hz. It also covers the main chambers, and promises to solve one of the problems with this type of panel: how little useful they are.
Until now, mobiles in this category included a small screen to see the time and notifications; Little more, with the possibility of responding to messages using preset responses or, for example, controlling Spotify playback.
With the 3.6-inch screen we can practically navigate the interface like any other traditional smartphone. There are even applications that adapt to this format, such as Google Maps. The fact of being able to use this panel like any other has a number of advantages.
- First of all, you can extend the life of the smartphonee, and more specifically, the useful life of the flexible interior panel, since it would not be necessary to open the screen to reply to a message or take a look at a post on Instagram.
- In second place, makes using the terminal much more intuitive Well, again, it is not necessary to open the interior screen to see the smallest detail.
In general, and after a first test, the interface of the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra looks correctly adapted to the size of the panel, and the applications run normally. We will have to wait for a more in-depth analysis to see if the screen is really useful on a day-to-day basis.
Beyond the screens, which are the main protagonists, the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra has other interesting specifications. It comes with a 12-megapixel main camera, as well as a 13-megapixel ultra-wide angle. It also includes a 3,800 mAh battery with 30W fast charging and is compatible with wireless charging. As for the processor, it includes a First generation Snapdragon 8+ with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal storage.
Finally a mid-range folding, but at what price?
€899.99. This is the price for which Motorola will market the Razr 40 in mid-July; which we could consider the first mid-range folding on the market. The mobile, specifically, arrives with the SoC Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 1, as well as with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage. It also has a slightly larger battery than its older brother: 4,200 mAh and includes the same charging power (30W) and compatibility with wireless charging.
Also, the Motorola Razr 40 has a 64 megapixel main camera, with a second 13-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera, and a selfie camera of the same resolution. Until now, we reiterate, benefits that we could see in any other mid-range smartphone, with an important difference not only compared to the rest of conventional mobiles, but also compared to the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra; your screen.
The Razr 40’s flexible inner panel is the same size and resolution as its bigger brother (a 6.9-inch Full HD+ panel), but with a lower 144Hz refresh rate. The outer panel is considerably smaller: 1.5 inches with a refresh rate of 120 Hz. The size, of course, does not allow you to navigate the interface in the same way as the Ultra model’s screen, but is only used to see the time and notifications.
Even so, and for 899 euros, the Motorola Razr 40 can be a very attractive option for those looking for a somewhat cheaper folding mobile. The smartphone, yes, not free of competitors. The Galaxy Z Flip 4, which has a design and exterior screen similar to that of the Razr 40, can be purchased for around 700 euros, and may be an even more interesting alternative. It will be necessary to see in more detail if this model surpasses that of Samsung in key points, such as the quality of the screen or the cameras.
