What is a total solar eclipse?
It occurs when the Moon covers the Sun and its shadow falls on a certain surface of the Earth.
This astronomical phenomenon will be visible in a thin strip that crosses the north of the country, from Mazatlán to Piedras Negras, Coahuila, in addition to the placement of three antennas in: Torreón, Zacatecas and Mexico City.
Eclipse will serve to do experiments
In addition, the eclipse will be used by some researchers who will carry out some experiments since the sky will darken at noon, which will allow data on phenomena related to the solar corona to be obtained.
Where will the 2024 solar eclipse be seen in Mexico?
The UNAM Institute of Geophysics detailed that in the port of Mazatlán the eclipse will begin at 9:51:23 am. The total phase of the eclipse will begin at 11:07:25 am and end at 11:11:45 am. The eclipse will end at 12:32:09 pm.
“Thus, in Mazatlán, the total eclipse will last 4 minutes and 20 seconds. This duration is the longest in the entire continent”, detailed on the page dedicated to this astronomical phenomenon .
How long will the eclipse last in Mexico?
Counting the partial and total stages, the duration of the eclipse will be 2 hours and 41 minutes.
Other cities in Mexico where the total eclipse can be seen will be:
- Durango.
- Torreón and Monclova, (both in Coahuila), although with a shorter duration.
However, most of the country will experience the partial eclipse. During the maximum phase of the eclipse in Mexico City, the Moon will cover 79% of the solar disk.
