Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is only a few days away from its premiere, and we had the opportunity to sit down with Nate Moore, director of production and development at Marvel Studios. In the interview we address some important aspects of the film, such as the challenges behind shooting a feature film of this caliber. But also themes that are present such as colonization, the way it affects people and entire societies. But it has also given us a good surprise in relation to the X-Men.
Nate Moore has been one of the key people in the development of many of the most recent productions within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Especially feature films like Captain America: Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Black Panther, Falcon and the Winter Soldier either Eternals.
Moore is considered one of the new hollywood leaders. He started at Marvel leading the studio’s writing team, and in Kevin Feige’s words, “has become an invaluable person to the directors he works with.”
On the way to the X-Men in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, according to Nate Moore
During the Interview (also available on YouTube), one of the bombshells that Nate Moore dropped on us is that, without a doubt, we are heading towards the X-Men within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. One of the revelations Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is the appearance of a second mutant, following the revelation that Kamala Khan is also a mutant, during the latest episode of Ms Marvel. Here is a small spoiler for the movie, although it does not affect the plot:
“I mean, it’s no secret, we’re headed to the X-Men. Hopefully sooner rather than later. But we think it’s a lot of fun to play with these ‘breadcrumbs’ to get the audience excited about the idea,” he explains. Moore in interview with hypertextual. “And to be honest, to be true to that character. I mean, Namor is the first mutant and we didn’t want to walk away from that.”
In the comics, Namor is also a mutant, the son of a human sea captain and a princess from the underwater kingdom of Atlantis. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, his place of origin is different, but his powers come, like his source material, from mutation.
The confirmation that Namor is a mutant and that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is heading towards the X-Men is a major reveal for fans that is clearly being teased in basically four of the studio’s recent releases.
- During Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness in which we can see a variant of Professor Charles Xavier.
- In the last episode of mrs marvelwhen Kamala Khan’s origin is revealed.
- In the last episode of she hulkwhen Jen Walters breaks the fourth wall and visits KEVIN
- And finally in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, with the origin of Namor.
The weight of colonization in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
Another important theme during the interview with Nate Moore was the weight of the effects of colonization and the way it is addressed in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. It is one of the great differences in relation to the origin story of Namor, who does not come from Atlantis, but is the ruler of the kingdom of Talocan, a civilization inspired by the Mesoamerican ones, especially the Aztec and the Mayan.
“I think Ryan [Coogler], when when he conceived of this world, he wanted it to be anchored in a real place, the same way Wakanda was in the first movie. And if you think about Atlantis, in the posts, that’s been around forever, maybe it’s sort of Roman-inspired, but it doesn’t feel incredibly specific. Thematically Ryan was and still is very interested in the issue of colonization and how it affects people,” explains Moore.
“So it was a matter of, well, by the way, there are too many, but what other nations have experienced this loss, and how does it juxtapose with Wakanda, which has never been colonized?”
“And looking at the Mayan civilization, both past and present, it’s so rich, both culturally and visually, but also the narrative is
tragic, it is wrong, because they still exist. But it’s replete with having to go through some of these issues, so it just made sense to lean into that and be really inspired by such a fantastical culture and hopefully give Talocan a bit of the same grounding in a reality as Wakanda.” , he continued.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever It opens on November 11 in theaters around the world. It will be the end of the fourth phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This is all we know about the movie so far.
