The White House counselor for the health crisis, Anthony Fauci, said Sunday that he does not think the United States needs new confinements, even if “the situation deteriorates” due to an “epidemic among the unvaccinated.”
A few days after the use of indoor masks for vaccinated people was re-imposed and amid the increase in cases due to the delta variant, Fauci considered in an interview with ABC that it is unlikely that the United States will return “to the same situation of the last winter “boreal.
“I don’t think we will see confinements,” Fauci said, despite “the situation is going to deteriorate” due to the “epidemic among the unvaccinated.”
“The solution is to be vaccinated,” added the immunologist, praising the effectiveness of vaccines against covid-19, which prevent serious illness, hospitalization or death.
“When unvaccinated people become infected, the dynamics of the epidemic spread, impacting the whole world,” he explained.
“The vaccines are incredibly effective even against (the variant) delta,” confirmed Francis Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), on CNN.
The new restrictions arise because those vaccinated appear to be contagious. But above all they serve to protect the unvaccinated, because those who were immunized are “25 times less likely” to become seriously ill, he recalled.
About 60% of American adults are vaccinated, but strong disparities persist between the generally better immunized North and the more reticent South.
