EFE.- The UN Executive Secretary for Climate Change, the Mexican Patricia Espinosa, considered that the success of the COP26 that starts this Sunday is “absolutely possible”, but requires more ambition, especially from the G20 countries.
“Success in the COP is absolutely possible” but “we need even more ambition from more countries, especially from the large emitters of the G20, responsible for close to 80% of global emissions,” Espinosa declared at the opening of COP26 at the British town of Glasgow.
The UN chief in charge of climate matters added that the current climate is “a fundamental point in history” in which “humanity faces clear and rigid choices.”

“Either we choose a rapid reduction of emissions on a large scale to maintain the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees or humanity faces a bleak future,” said Espinosa, who also called for redoubling efforts for adaptation and mitigation. or “more people will die, more families will suffer.”
In the first day of two weeks of conferences and negotiations to keep global warming at the end of the century below 1.5 degrees with respect to pre-industrial values, he issued a warning to the attendees if there is no change of course: “We invest in our own extinction ”.
“It is much more than the environment, it is about peace, stability and the institutions that we have built to promote the well-being of all,” added Espinosa, who asked the parties to work collectively “not only for present generations but also for all those who are to come ”.
