Nobody is surprised that Barcelona and Real Madrid lead the list of the teams that have lifted the Super Cup the most times. The Catalans reigned 13 times, while their eternal rival has 11 trophies in their showcases, waiting for what happens this Sunday in the grand finale in Riyadh.
That the third is Athletic and not teams like Atlético de Madrid, Sevilla or Valencia is instead striking. And if he also shares that record with a team that is not part of the 42 that make up professional football, the surprise is even greater. But, what is that team that appears third in the winners of the Super Cup?
With three titles, Deportivo de la Coruña is the third in discord. The Blue and Whites won all three finals they played: against Real Madrid (1995), Espanyol (2000) and Valencia (2002). His achievements coincided with the best years of the club, which for more than a decade held top positions in Spain and surprised Europe with its football.
Almost two decades have passed since that last title. Athletic could get the A Coruña team out of the box this weekend. We will see. But now the concerns to the northwest of the peninsula are different. They have more to do with a promotion that resists, but that from the first position of their group looks closer.
Atlético de Madrid is fifth on the list with two Super Cups. And from there there are up to five other clubs that have a trophy.
