The Government has approved in the Council of Ministers held today Tuesday a new royal decree that will impose mandatory video surveillance systems in all Spanish slaughterhouses, to try to guarantee greater compliance with animal welfare regulations.
The Ministry of Consumption has advanced it, announcing that Spain is going to be the first country in the European Union to implement this system in its slaughterhouses, despite the fact that similar measures were announced a few years ago in countries such as France or Scotland. The legislation does not change, but rather the objective is to increase control, thus adding a added tool to inspections that are already carried out, and that are sometimes insufficient due to the lack of personnel that can cover all the facilities distributed throughout the national territory.
In the words of the Minister of Consumption, Alberto Garzon“This is a rule that places Spain at the head of Europe in this matter and that, in addition to guaranteeing the wellness of the animals during their stay in the slaughterhouses, also improves the guarantees of food safety for the consumers”.
These video cameras will have to cover all spaces and facilities where live animals are found, including unloading areas, driving corridors and places where stunning and bleeding activities are carried out. until the death of the animals. Although they will not be mandatory in the waiting areas where the vehicles that transport animals are, the time in which they remain inside must be controlled.

Once the royal decree is published in the BOE, large slaughterhouses will have one year to adapt to the regulations and the small ones, two. Those responsible for them are the ones who must store all the recorded images and ensure their reproduction and copy with the same quality for the verifications that may be required by the authorized control services, whose competence corresponds to the CCAA.
