One of the main novelties of the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max is the new always-on screen, which allows you to see relevant information, such as the time or the widgets from the lock screen, at any time and without having to activate the terminal. This feature, yes, and despite the fact that it works thanks to the LTPO technology of the panel of both models, which adjusts the refresh rate to 1Hz, it can slightly affect battery life. Fortunately, Apple automatically deactivates it on different occasions, such as, for example, and according to the German youtuber Felixba, if we leave the iPhone in a room and leave it with an Apple Watch linked to that model.
It is, without a doubt, a very interesting feature, and it can be extremely useful to save battery, since it is not necessary to have the always active screen in operation when the iPhone is not in sight. Apparently the Apple Watch, through its proximity sensors, is capable of detecting when the user is moving away from their iPhone 14 Pro or iPhone 14 Pro Max. At a certain distance, it sends an action to the iPhone that allows the screen to completely turn off. It is unknown, however, if this function is compatible with all Apple Watch models, as Apple has not offered details about this function.
In addition to the ability to turn off the always-on display with Apple Watch, Apple also disables it when iPhone 14 Pro or iPhone 14 Pro Max is placed face down on a flat surface, as well as when in the user’s pocket or bag.
This is how the always-on screen of the iPhone 14 Pro works
The functions to turn off the lock screen, in addition, are complemented by the technology that includes the panel of the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max themselves. Both models, in particular, have an OLED screen that has a variable refresh rate.
This allows you to adjust the refresh rate between 1 Hz and 120 Hz automatically. If, for example, the screen detects movement, it will apply 120 Hz. On the other hand, if the user does not scroll or the panel is not playing content, minimize the frequency to 1 Hz.
When the Always-on screen of the iPhone 14 Pro is in operation, the panel applies the 1 Hz to save battery, since the information shown by this feature does not require any type of animation or movement. In case the user interacts with the panel, the frequency can increase slightly or even reach 120 Hz.
