The Madrid City Council has just published an illustrated map of the city in which the protagonist is “one of the most beloved artists of the 20th century in Spain”, Lola Flores. The popular artist, born in Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz), lived for many years in the Madrid capital and this map brings together the fundamental places that They marked a life and career full of milestones, memories, curiosities and the occasional legend.
Illustrated by Irene Blasco and with an introduction by Cristina Crucesprofessor of Social Anthropology at the University of Seville, this free publication is part of the series of cultural maps that the City Council’s Tourism Area proposes as alternative guides for tourists and residents with whom to explore Madrid in a different way, combining history, popular culture, art, monumental heritage and also gastronomy.
The map of the dancer, singer and actress is made up of a selection of 16 points duly marked on the map – a work of art in itself -, 13 that allow a tour of the center and main neighborhoods, and three enclaves close to the city that were also transcendental in the artist’s life.
In the gastronomic section, in Lola Flores’ Madrid the essential restaurant stands out Lucio House (Cava Baja, 35), in the La Latina neighborhood, where, according to the guide, Lola Flores usually went every week since it opened in 1974, because Pescaílla liked to take the whole family to eat the now legendary broken eggs.
We must also mention the reborn Florida Park, an iconic cabaret in the heart of Retiro Park that in its heyday served as a television set for legendary performances. This was where, for example, the famous anecdote of the artist stopping her performance because she had lost an earring. “Sorry, but I dropped a gold earring. […]. Well, you are going to give it back to me because my little job cost me […]. Thank you very much from the bottom of my heart, but the earring, Íñigo, I don’t want to lose it, eh? Please”.
