A call at the wrong time, a fire that is too powerful or simply having too many things to do. Surely more than once one of these reasons has created a real nonsense in your kitchen and has caused the water in a pot to overflow as much as possible, setting the lost fires.
Whoever says water can also say milk, broths or the stews themselves in which we cook chickpeas, lentils, pasta, rice… Boiling is a double-edged sword in our kitchen. and a fire that is too powerful can cause the liquid to begin to spread mercilessly.
However, there is a grandmother’s remedy that works and did work. And it will always work and although we think it has more to do with popular wisdom, in the background there is touches of physics that justify this reality.
It was not necessary for our grandmothers to be Albert Einstein to put into practice what we could call ‘the spoon trick’ and which is nothing other than cross a wooden spoon crossed over the pot, saucepan or casserole in question to prevent it from overflowing during boiling.
And yes, we said wood, which is not another whim, but the responsible material that will ensure that this boiling does not exceed the pot and end up taming the boiling water that emerges there. If we do it with a spoon made of any other material, be it any type of metal or some type of silicone, the result will never be the same.
Because? Well, because the wood with which the spoons and kitchen instruments are made is treated with a hydrophobic material that repels water. Logical, since wood is normally porous materials that, if they got wet, would end up absorbing water and swelling. Reason why this type of kitchenware has a coating that prevents this from happening.

However, Not all wooden spoons are worth it. For the trick to work, the spoon or element in question must be cold or, rather, it must not be hot. When the spoon has been heated, the hydrophobic effect is lost and the liquid will spill out again. Reason why the spoon we are going to put should not be heated.
