The lifestyle in countries such as Spain, Tunisia, France, Greece, Italy and Morocco gave rise to this architectural trend, emerging with great force in the 1920s in the United States, with the aim of recreating the coastal lifestyle.
According to Christopher Muscato, historian and professor at the University of Northern Colorado, “this name is misappropriated as it’s more about capturing the feel of the Mediterranean than reviving a specific style, but it’s still a fun aesthetic.”
In the beginning, California and Florida were the states that adopted it in their vacation homes, villas and hotels. Architect Addison Mizner can be credited with making him famous in the state of Florida, to the point where it was called the ‘Mizner style’. For their part, in California, it was the architects Bertram Goodhue and Summer Spaulding who popularized the style.
A century later, this style continues to inspire the design of numerous super-luxury residences around the world. But what makes this style one of the most glamorous? These are some of the unique features.
1. Fusion of different styles
This architectural style is inspired by various ideologies, the Spanish being the most prominent. Mixing different elements of the Spanish Renaissance, the Spanish Colonial with that of the Italian Renaissance defines Mediterranean architecture. It also incorporates Venetian, Gothic and Arabic styles.
2. The unmistakable element
The roof design is the most striking. It is what catches the eye at first glance. A roof set with thick red or terracotta tiles is a distinctive feature of this style. It is a low-rise, hipped roof with the presence of wide cantilevers that makes it a signature of the Mediterranean style.
3. Symmetry in the facades
The exterior is the second most prominent element that makes this style different from the rest. To add contrast to the deep red tile roofs, the facades are kept white, beige or pastel. They are always covered in stucco, a characteristic of Spanish styles. However, the Italian look of the facade makes it unique. Symmetry is emphasized above all to give it a solemn appearance. The exteriors are also covered with whitewash paint to preserve authenticity.
4. Window and door designs
A notable feature of the Mediterranean style of the residences is the presence of arched doors and windows. To maintain symmetry there are a uniform number of windows on both sides of the driveway or garage. The interiors also feature arched doors throughout. They are oversized to create an open environment.
5. A surplus of open spaces
Since luxury is the central theme of Mediterranean constructions, open spaces are a key element. The courtyards and lush gardens add a feeling of openness. These spaces are equipped with luxurious armchairs and a fireplace.
6. A tasteful apartment
They are characterized by geometric motifs. Sometimes stairs or walls also feature tile accents. Drawing inspiration often from Mediterranean countries.
7. Integration of columns in the design
Elements such as columns and parapets are incorporated into the architectural style of the Mediterranean Renaissance. They can be used as structural supports or simply for ornamental purposes. Designs influenced by the Italian Renaissance where the columns used can be twisted, ornamented or spirally with beautiful carvings.
8. Different materials such as wrought iron accentuate the design
The wrought iron gives the building a Mediterranean flair. It is mainly found in interior door bars, railings, windows and balconies. Sometimes light fixtures and stairs also employ the use of wrought iron.
