“The FAA requested to reschedule the meeting and make the visit to Mexico as soon as possible,” the AFAC said in a press release.
The visit of Billy Noen, FAA administrator, was expected tomorrow to continue the work to recover Category 1 aviation safety, which has lasted for almost two years after the US authority downgraded Mexico to Category 2 in May 2021.
The measure was taken after the inability of the AFAC -in terms of personnel, salaries and scope- to comply with the security measures required by the International Civil Air Organization (ICAO). This has prevented Mexican airlines from opening new routes, increasing frequencies and adding new aircraft to the United States.
The works to carry out a final audit are expected for February, and in March the conclusions would be reached to eventually recover Category 1 in April, assured Jorge Nuño Lara, head of the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport (SICT), during his appearance in the Chamber of Deputies as part of the Fourth Government Report last December.
