One of the great uncertainties regarding Avatar: The Way of Water is the villain This doubt is clearing up as the premiere of the production gets closer and its cast takes the floor in the press circuit. Who has done it, this time, is Stephen Lang, who in the first film played Colonel Miles Quaritch.
Spectators with a good memory, or who have seen Avatar in the revival that was organized recently, you will remember that Colonel Miles Quaritch is the villain of this production and dies during the end of the movie. Or so it seemed. This character is confirmed as the main adversary of the protagonists of Avatar: The Way of Water.
The question regarding his return is what justifies it, how is it possible that a character, who apparently died during the first film, returns in Avatar: The Way of Water as a villain. Stephen Lang, faced with questions, addressed the case during an interview given to Empire.
The return of Colonel Miles Quaritch
in Avatar: The Way of Water
During Avatar (2009), the character played by Stephen Lang was one of the high points of the production. Not so much because of his performance as because of his symbolic value: in a world that emphasizes the value of nature, Colonel Miles Quaritch stood out like the military boot that crushes the flower in its path. Part of this philosophy could return in Avatar: The Way of Water.
After his return to the role, Stephen Lang explained in Empire magazine the following in relation to Avatar: The Way of Water and the villain:
“It’s the same Quaritch, but I think it’s incomplete. If you think about it, in the original movie, Quaritch served a role; he was a colorful, full of personality, but he was really there to provide conflict. Now, he still has that feature, but I also think that, just because of the depth of what Jim is exploring now, he’s a little bit more than that.”
Maybe more complete? Could be. Stephen Lang said:We’re seeing parts of him that I haven’t seen before. That only makes sense because we don’t want to be massaging the same territory over and over again. We need to go to new places and in fact he does it”.
But how does it come back to life inside Avatar: The Way of Water? The actor explained in the aforementioned medium:
“He is a genetically engineered autonomous avatar. It has been loaded with the mind, the emotions, and most interestingly, possibly the spirit of Quaritch. Now, all of that is pretty esoteric. He comes with a full memory bank until the moment he actually undergoes the DNA transfer. So there are certain things that he has no recollection of at all. She has no recollection of his death.”
This makes it what, within the narrative, is defined as “recombinant”. Avatar: The Way of Water It will be released on December 16 of this year.directed by James Cameron, who also directed the first installment.
