For many years the city of Venice has been converted into a living museum. The Italian city is one of the main tourist attractions in the country and also a hive of travelers, which makes it impossible for the Venetians to live in their city.
Although It is not the only city in the world that is afflicted with this disease, the truth is that it is one of the most paradigmatic examples of how uncontrolled tourism can completely change a city.
For this, in the city of Venice it will implement in 2024, a pioneering system that it will force tourists passing through the city (only one day) to pay an entrance fee. Almost as if it were an amusement park, Venice will force each tourist who passes through the city to pay five euros.
The decision, taken by the City Council, will begin to apply for 30 days next 2024, taking into account spring break and also summer weekends. That is to say, it seems that from the outset the (temporary) measure will only be applied on days that have a special influx of public.
All visitors over 14 years of age must go through the box and, as sources from the Venetian city council explain, it is about “finding a balance between the rights of visitors and those of people who live, study or work in the city”.
Similarly, the same sources, cited by the media agency Reuters, They explain that it is not a movement designed to generate moneybut to promote a rate that allows the costs of this initiative to be covered.
It is unknown when this plan will go into effect, but it is expected that by the end of next week the Venetian City Council has already made the decision to know on what specific date the measure will be implemented. Interestingly, this is not the first time that this measure has come to light.
Venice already planned to launch it in 2019, but had to be suspended as a result of the COVID 19 pandemicwhich made it impossible to carry it out for technical reasons, and it also stopped making sense, since the influx of tourists was much less.
