No matter how comfortable a canned stew is, little can compare to the pleasure of an Asturian stew at home. Of course, if something improves the experience, obviously, it is that they prepare it for you in their own land. You don’t need many excuses to escape to Asturias, but it is also possible to enjoy spooning beans in other cities in Spain where true worship is rendered to fabada. And it is in Madrid, Toledo and the Region of Murcia where you can try the best.
At least that is how the jury of the semifinal of the 2023 “The Best Fabada in the World” contest has decided, which has pitted 16 selected restaurants against each other in the kitchens of the Asturian Center in Madrid. There are five national finalists who they will face the Asturian locals elected by the Principality on March 21 in Villaviciosa.
The restaurants that have dazzled the jury of experts with their fabadas have been hydrangea house Y Arturo Grill Meson from Madrid, Menendez House of Águilas (Region of Murcia) and The Parador de Illescas and the Canteen Iberumfrom Toledo.
The contest, which held its first edition in 2011, was born with the aim of promoting both Asturias itself and its gastronomy as well as the traditional fabada as iconic dishspreading the qualities of the faba local and promote its consumption, not only in the Asturian territory itself.
We assume that the absolute winner, who will be able to boast the title of ‘king of fabada‘ For a year, it will be an Asturian restaurant, although, according to the words of the jury of this semifinal, the foreign applicants demonstrate an increasingly higher level and are serious competitors to win the first prize.
