May the Asturians forgive us, but the jury has spoken: the best fabada in the world in 2023 will not be cooked in the Principality, but in the capital of Spain. It is the verdict that this year’s edition of “The Best Fabada in the World“, the contest held on the 21st in Villaviciosa the grand final in which foreign finalists faced off against local restaurants. And, for the first time in his history, the king of Asturian fabada is not Asturian.
The winner of this edition has been the Meson Asturiano Sidrería Arturo, in the heart of the Madrid neighborhood of Hortaleza, a restaurant with a homey family atmosphere and specialized in traditional Asturian cuisine, run by Asturians, with the iconic fabada as the flag of its menu. This Mesón, moreover, has also won the “Cocina de Paisaje” award for the best stew from outside Asturias, as it could not be less.
In second place have been another local Madrid, Casa Hortensia Restaurant & Cider Housealso famous in the capital for its fabadas, and the restaurant completes the podium the willow in Peñamellera Baja, a council located in eastern Asturias.
The list of winners is completed by the food house la llosa de Oles, who has obtained the “Amable Bedriñana” memorial for the Best Fabada de Villaviciosa; The Mountain House, who has won the award for best compango; and Tierrina Vaquerawhich has won the producer award in its first edition.
the contest The Best Fabada in the World It has been taking place since 2011 and has been growing in notoriety and in the number of participants who come from all over Spain. The expert jury makes a blind tasting in which aspects such as aesthetics, the aromas that emerge from the stew, the general flavor, the quality of the faba and also that of the compango and condiments.
