Second term?
“Since he resigned from the Ministry of Economy, it was clear that Márquez could be the strong card to succeed Julio Santaella. He does meet the academic requirements, but we don’t know if he can really fill the shoes that the current president would leave behind, as there is a very particular specialty of Inegi ”, says Ernesto O’Farril, president of Grupo Bursamétrica.
The members of the Board must be distinguished professionals in matters related to statistics, geography or economics; having held at least five years a high-level position in the public or private sectors, or being an academic of recognized prestige in the aforementioned subjects, refers to article 69 of the Law of the National System of Statistical Information and Geography (LSNIEG).
“In that position there are profiles such as the career economist, the mathematician, the doctor of science, someone in computer science. Márquez’s profile seems ideal to me, with sufficient academic characteristics ”, considers the founder and director of the consulting firm Triplethree International.
Julio Santaella is a world-renowned economist, he has a very good work team, in his current presidency new methodologies and indicators have emerged. The communication strategy has been excellent, “I would not see, why not re-elect him, the INEGI statutes allow it”, O’Farril emphasizes.
Santaella has a degree in Economics from ITAM, and a Master and Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). From 2001 to 2014 he worked at Banco de México (Banxico) as executive coordinator of the Mexican Petroleum Fund for Stabilization and Development; He was Director of Support for Central Banking Operations, and as a researcher at the General Directorate for Economic Research and at the Governing Board.
In the academic field, he has been a teacher at ITAM and a researcher at the IMF.
New members?
In the event that Santaella leaves, a new member must arrive who may remain as vice president or president. In addition, the appointment of a new member comes at the end of 2022. For these positions the parade of names of candidates is vast.
“Whoever gets to the presidency has to be someone with enough experience in this area, usually the Bank of Mexico has candidates, there is, for example, Daniel Chiquiar, its chief economist. There is also Alejandrina Salcedo, director of Economic Measurement. She could jump with the support of the Banxico Governing Board ”, says Oviedo.
The president of Bursamétrica mentions Gabriel Casillas, Banorte’s head of Research; Pablo Álvarez Icaza, academic coordinator of Public and Legislative Policies of the Council to Prevent and Eliminate Discrimination of Mexico City (COPRED), and Eduardo Loria, founder of the Center for Modeling and Economic Forecasting of the UNAM Faculty of Economics.
