What are Mexican workers injured from?
According to IMSS data, these were the 5 most frequent injuries among Mexican workers, during 2020.
- Wrist and Hand Injury, with 33,656 cases.
- Dislocation, Sprain and Torsion of Joints and Ligaments of the Ankle and Foot with 23470 cases.
- Superficial Trauma of the Wrist and Hand, with 14,643 cases.
- Superficial Trauma of the Leg, with 12,819 cases.
- Dislocation, Sprain and Strain of Joints and Ligaments of the Neck, with 12,281 cases.
This in relation to the 278,183 work accidents registered by the IMSS that year. The occupations that suffered the most injuries to the wrist of the hand were cooks, butchers and warehouse managers.
Atypical figures during 2020
And these are the economic activities that registered the most work accidents and illnesses during 2020. Here, unlike other years, the activity classified as ‘social security’ registered 115,644 cases of the 397,658 recorded during 2020.
Within ‘social security’, the IMSS includes the personnel who work in public institutions whose purpose is to provide medical care, protect livelihoods and provide social services for individual and collective well-being.
But these figures must be taken with reservation, because, for example, in 2019, the accidents and work-related illnesses that were registered in this economic activity were only 7,488 and represented only 1.8% of the total; as opposed to 29% in 2020.
The disparity in the data between the two years and the statistical history could also be due to the effect of COVID-19. Well, it should be remembered that this disease was classified as a work risk by the Mexican government.
