- 70 million new users is what Telegram got after the Facebook blackout
- Its founder, Pavel Durov, acknowledged that, from one day to the next, the platform registered a significant increase in its users
- Despite this figure, Telegram is still far from WhatsApp, which has more than two billion users in the world
From one day to the next, and thanks to the precipitous fall of the services of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, Telegram added 70 million new users.
Facebook’s so-called “Black Monday” continues to reap the ravages it has caused, being undoubtedly one of the most complex events in the history of Mark Zuckerberg’s platform.
As has already been reported in all the specialized and non-specialized media, yesterday, in a period of more than six hours, WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram had an extremely serious blackout, one of the worst crashes of their system in years.
Given this, and thanks to the emergence of new tools and / or digital platforms, users began to find various alternatives that allowed them to continue communicating.
Twitter and Telegram, the two winners in the blackout
Among the social networks that were victorious, Twitter stands out, without a doubt, which even took advantage of its platform to mock the fall of Facebook and sent a “welcome” message to its new users.
In that battle between Facebook and Twitter, two of the most popular social networks in history, the bird’s application had a great performance yesterday.
Let’s talk, then, about WhatsApp, another of the social networks that suffered the ravages of the failure in the Facebook system. The instant messaging application, the most used by Internet users (with more than two billion users in the world), was replaced by one of its main competencies: Telegram.
Saying “competition” is actually saying a lot, because, to this day, Telegram, although it has had significant growth, is far from fighting WhatsApp with its more than two billion users.
However, the Facebook blackout was very well used by Telegram, since, as reported, the platform added 70 million new users between yesterday and today, just in the period in which WhatsApp and Messenger stopped working.
Telegram welcomes its new 70 million users
Through a statement, Pavel Durov, founder of Telegram, acknowledged on Tuesday that, thanks to the fall of Facebook, today the platform has new members in its community:
“Telegram’s daily growth rate exceeded the norm in terms of magnitude and we welcomed more than 70 million refugees from other platforms in one day,” Durov wrote.
Although he did not expressly say so, the truth is that this sudden increase in users at a global level was due to the fact that, yesterday, one of the most important catastrophes in the history of Facebook occurred, leaving more than 3,500 millions of users in the world without access to WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger.
According to a statement from Mark Zuckerberg’s social network presented today, this failure was due to a faulty change in its configuration, a fact that affected Internet users for more than six hours.
Without a doubt, what is clear after the blackout is the fact that more platforms are needed for users, since Facebook is monopolizing the market with three of the most powerful social networks on the planet.
If we should have learned something from yesterday’s fall, it is that, ultimately, users should not only stay with Facebook, WhatsApp, Messenger or Instagram, but more options are needed for them.
The Facebook blackout has been by far one of the most complex and catastrophic events in the history of social media and, without a doubt, a great lesson for Mark Zuckerberg and his team.
