How much will Telefónica’s 5G plans and top-ups cost?
Telefónica will offer the 5G technology in recharges of 10 pesos, as well as in plans from 235 pesos. It will be available in Mexico City, Culiacán and Hermosillo and at the end of December it will be enabled in Monterrey and Guadalajara.
The international experience for the massification of 5G, adds Aya, has shown that it is normal for the adoption of this technology to go in phases, but in the Mexican market it has already been a long period with offers focused on postpaid customers, leaving out 83 % of Mexicans who use this modality, according to data from the consultancy The Ciu.
“We want the decision to have 5G in Movistar to depend solely on the mobile device and not on the offer of payment schemes,” says the Telefónica executive.
The Spanish telecommunications operator has been the one that has grown the most in the postpaid segment thanks to its commitment to unlimited and flexible data plans. In the third quarter of this year, it registered a 13% increase in sales per device, boosted by its postpaid model. This trend could help firms so that their users migrate to the new network or reach new potential clients.
While in the prepaid segment, Telefónica has decreased due to the fact that the company focused in the last two years on the item of rental plans; However, it is confident that 5G will give it a boost in the segment, without detailing a specific number of users that could add to its subscriber base.
5G requires evolution in services
Telefónica sees in the fifth generation a watershed for industries and users but also for the telecommunications sector itself. The true value of the new generation in networks is not speed, but the digital transformation that 5G will drive in various sectors such as mining, health, education, energy and entertainment.
Telefónica will bet on the gamingwhile Mexico is positioned as one of the 10 most important markets globally, with 65.9 million video gamers aged six or over and with registered revenues of 16,928 million pesos in the first half of 2022, according to The Ciu data.
The company has already begun to take the first steps to position itself in this industry. In October of this year, it decided to sponsor Cinemex’s Gaming Center Arena The Place to Play, the eSports R7 team, and also launched Movistar Star Cups, an operator competition produced by Liga de Videojuegos Profesional that takes place virtually in the modality Burst Solitaire Mode for the Free Fire game and which can be accessed by all its users.
“Movistar will be seen more and more associated with issues of gaming because it is an industry that has grown a lot and as (telecommunications) operators we have to continue climbing”, concludes the manager.
