In January of this year, Microsoft introduced a series of changes to Xbox Game Pass focused on clearly displaying information about a membership, including its price, how to cancel it, and how to get a refund. Now, nintendo and Sony have made similar modifications to their subscription services.
In the case of Sony, it was agreed to implement new measures for PS Plus subscribers, including contact long-term customers who haven’t used the service for a while to remind them how to cancel subscriptions. If users do not cancel the service, but do not actively use it, the company will stop accepting payments.
For its part, the Nintendo Switch Online service will no longer be sold with auto-renewal set as the default option. If users want to activate it, they will need to do so after registering.
The changes that have been presented to Switch Online and PS Plus come after an investigation by the Competition and Markets Authority, or CMA for its acronym in English, which was focused on the practices of automatic renewal of subscriptions. This was what Michael Grenfell, executive director of application of this organization, commented:
“As a result of our investigations, a number of changes have been made to this industry to protect customers and help address concerns about auto-renewing subscriptions.
Therefore, today’s announcement concludes our investigations into the online gaming industry. Companies in other industries that offer auto-renewing subscriptions should review their practices to ensure they comply with consumer protection law.”
On related topics, Xbox drops a heavy blow against the new PS Plus. Similarly, Bandai Namco is working on a remake of a 3D Nintendo game.
Editor’s note:
While these types of updates may sound insignificant to some, these changes are focused on improving the user’s subscription, in this case removing it if a person simply doesn’t use the benefits they are given. Hopefully pro-user decisions will come in the future.
