Sony wants iPhone users to get the most out of PS Remote Play, the company’s platform that lets you play PlayStation games on mobile. The Japanese firm has teamed up with BackBone, an accessory manufacturer, to launch a device that not only aims to enhance the aforementioned application. Also, offer an experience similar to what we would get when playing with one of the brand’s consoles, but anywhere. Its about Backbone One PlayStation Edition.
This new Sony accessory, already available in countries such as Mexico, Spain and the United States, is inspired —in a way— by the DualSense, the PlayStation 5 controller. It does so, yes, with a design adapted to the different models of iPhone available. The Backbone One PlayStation Edition, in particular, features an expandable opening in the center to allow for docking from an iPhone 13 minithe most compact model of iPhone, up to an iPhone 13 Max; the largest model. It also includes a somewhat more characteristic aesthetic than that of the Backbone accessories, with two traditional joysticks and rounded handles.
But there is an interesting change: the buttons, instead of the characteristic letters (A,B,Y,X), they have the shapes that Sony includes in its controls (X, triangle, circle and square). This allows the games available on PS Remote Play to be fully compatible, a platform that, let us remember, gives the possibility of playing video games available on PlayStation, from the smartphone itself. It makes sense, therefore, that Backbone bet on the classic Sony keypad. The games, in fact, can show recommendations and tutorials based on actions that can be done through the different icons. For example, pressing triangle to pick up an object.
Sony’s Backbone One PlayStation Edition is compatible with any platform available on iPhone
As indicated TheVergeSony’s Backbone One PlayStation Edition also supports third-party platforms. Among them, Apple Arcade (the subscription service of the Cupertino company), Xbox Game Pass and Stadia. The buttons, yes, may not coincide with the actions of the game, so the user must first check what each key is for.
The Sony Backbone One PlayStation Edition, in addition to the classic buttons, also includes shortcuts to some PS Remote Play options, such as image capture. This device is available in Spain for a price of 100 euros. In Mexico, it is available for 2,990 pesos and can be purchased at the BackBone online store. In any case, BackBone also sells a similar controller for the same price. This, in addition, is also compatible with iPhone and even other Android devices, and does not include the classic Sony button panel, but the traditional letters. It is also an alternative to Razer’s Kishi V2.
