The Nothing Phone (1) is, without a doubt, one of the most anticipated phones of the year. And not only because of the campaign hype they have run from Carl Pei’s new company. The product, as we commented in its analysis, is quite interesting from several points of view. However, that good feeling is being overshadowed by complaints from some early buyerswho have found bugs on the screens of their devices.
The problems that have been exposed for the moment in social networks are two. On the one hand, a green tint in certain regions of the screen and, on the other, dead pixels around the hole through which the front camera emerges.
One of the key questions that, at the moment, has no answer, is what percentage of the total Nothing Phone (1) delivered suffer from any of these problems. Is it a specific consignment, are they very isolated cases or is it a recurrent failure in the production chain? The brand, for the moment, has not made it publicly clear. The unit we have had access to in hypertextualat least for the moment, does not suffer from any of these problems.
The challenge of scaling the production of a product like the Nothing Phone (1)
Scaling production without making mistakes is always one of the biggest challenges facing technology companies. Tesla, the car manufacturer, is a prime example of this. Building a car to perfection is relatively easy. Doing it at scale, with speed and without errors, on the other hand, is a significantly greater challenge. Even Elon Musk himself has recognized on more than one occasion.
It would not be a surprise, therefore, if a start-up company like Nothing faces some difficulties during the production process of the Nothing Phone (1). Especially with the first remittances.
The positive side is that, Although Nothing is a new company and the Nothing Phone (1) is its first mobile phone, the people who work in it are not newbies. Carl Pei, its CEO, co-founded OnePlus. And the team includes people from other companies in the mobile telephony sector. Therefore, while some parts may need to be oiled early in production, the people involved in these processes likely have the resources and experience to deal effectively with any potential obstacles along the production line.
In any case, however, it is important to emphasize that, for the time being, it is unknown whether the number of units affected by any of these failures represents a small percentage of the total number of units delivered or, on the contrary, it is an incident to larger scale.
The number of units delivered, let us remember, is reduced for the time being, since the Nothing Phone (1) does not reach many sales channels until next July 21. The units that are being delivered at the moment are those that were reserved by invitation before the official presentation of the product. As the phones reach more customers, it will be possible to have a clearer idea of the real scope of the problem.
