With the latest controversy about Realfooding still giving tail on the fashion of make certain foods that are eaten occasionally ‘healthy’, Twitter surprises again through the shelf of a supermarket with one of the ‘processed’ nutritionist Carlos Ríos.
The door is opened by the pharmacist Gemma del Cano (@pharmacy on his Twitter account) when wondering about the price comparison between two Danone brand products and the price disparity between one and the other.
On the one hand, the classic natural yogurt made by the French brand. On the other, a natural yogurt [líquido en este caso] which is also manufactured by Danone, but which It has the Realfooding seal.
🥄Natural yogurt that is “real” food: €2.69/kg

So far there are hardly any differences; except when we look at the price. Natural yogurt costs €2.69/kg, while the liquid alternative and Realfood costs €4.55/kg. In essence they are the same product, since they are still yogurts, although it is possible that the origin of the milk or one of the ingredients of both yogurts differs or could be more expensive, in addition to the production process.
On the one hand, in terms of sale price, we find the Danone natural yogurt pack of 4 units —120 grams per unit— at €1.29; for the other, Danone & Realfooding natural liquid yogurt gluten-free 525g at €2.39 per unit.
What is true is that nutritionally we did not find a great differentiation between both products, seeing that the only appreciable difference is in the percentage of total fats (conventional yogurt being slightly higher).
Nutritional information | Danone plain yogurt | Liquid natural yogurt Realfooding Danone |
---|---|---|
fats | 2.9g | 1.8g |
of which saturates | 1.3g | 1.2g |
carbohydrates | 4.3g | 4.2g |
of which sugars | 4.3g | 4.2g |
protein | 3.3g | 3.3g |
Salt | 0.12g | 0.12g |
shades that too are practically repeated in the composition of both yogurts, as extracted from the Carrefour website, where both products are for sale.
In that case, Danone natural yogurt is made up of fresh pasteurized milk (98%), skimmed milk powder and lactic ferments; while Danone & Realfooding natural liquid yogurt is made with pasteurized skimmed milk, pasteurized cream, skimmed milk powder and lactic ferments. That is, except for the cream, both compositions are identical in terms of formulation.
A differentiation that, even on the supermarket chain’s own page, we find with Carrefour liquid yogurt (at €1.30/kg, which coincides with the size of the container), which in this case it does not have cream on its label either, nor does Danone’s strawberry-flavored liquid yogurt (€2.09 per unit, at €3.80/kg), whose composition does differ significantly in the case of the three previous yogurts.
The percentages will change and, of course, change the way you make yogurt (as well as its storage or treatment), which could be part of the reason for the price increase of almost two euros compared to two yogurts that, as appears in the information from Carrefour, in both cases are made with Spanish milk.
