“Mexico is far below the needs for chargers for electric vehicles that it will have in the coming years, and that is why it is very important to work on various aspects for the charging infrastructure,” says Odracir Barquera, director of the AMIA.
The ratio of cars per charging station has gone from one for every three last year, to seven cars for every connector today, underscoring the urgent need for a significant expansion in the charging network.
So far this year, 11,053 plug-in vehicles have been sold in Mexico, including 100% electric and plug-in hybrids. In August, electric car sales represented 1.22% of total units sold, marking the first month to reach above one percentage point.
Although cumulative sales of fully electric vehicles still represent less than 1% of total sales, the industry anticipates a considerable increase in the coming years. According to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography, Mexico will sell 72,655 electric vehicles nationwide by 2030, 1,190% more than those sold in 2022.
“Obviously it is still a not so big market, but we are expecting it to grow significantly over the next few years,” says Barquera.
