Roses are not only beautiful, but they will also give your garden a soft and pleasant aroma. This is what you have to do to take care of them.
A significant number of people like roses; there are even those who grow them at home. Therefore, if you are interested in doing the same, there are several things you should know for its correct care. The first thing is that if they are in pots, much better!
But beware! Having roses in pots is not a task to be taken lightly. Make sure you provide the right balance of care and nutrients. Nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, among others, are part of their diet.
The first thing we must determine is what type of rose we have. Botanical, ancient or modern? Always choose the variety that best suits the climate of your home.
1. Find out before making the purchase
Do not underestimate this step if you want to achieve good results with your roses. You can do this online or ask a nursery expert, but stick with those that will thrive in the climate where you plan to grow them. Opt for those that are resistant to attacks by pests and diseases.
By choosing a potted specimen, these can be purchased throughout the year. Notice that it has many buds, but no open flowers, and that its stem is green.
In addition, discard those whose stem is dark. If for some reason you got a plant with any dark stems, cutting them off will prevent them from contaminating the rest of the plant.
On the other hand, bare root roses, those that are sold without soil and whose stem lacks leaves, are cheaper. Just keep in mind that they must be planted once you buy them, so that their roots do not dry out. It is recommended that you soak its roots in warm water.
2. Choose a good pot
The choice of bowl is very important. This will be the first home of your plant and will help the roses to grow favorably.
Spacious pots are best, considering that the roots require space to grow strong. Starting from this, the bowls 50 centimeters wide and 60 deep serve.
That’s the way it is, mud is the ideal material to keep the roots of any plant cool. Similarly, make sure the pot has open drainage holes at its base; this prevents the roots from rotting from the accumulation of water.
3. Provides irrigation just in its measure
Irrigation is one of the points in which novice gardeners often make mistakes, either due to excess or lack of water. Roses have specific demands.
Placing some stones at the bottom of the pot, without obstructing the drainage holes, helps prevent the water from stagnating. How often should you water roses? Everything will depend on the temperature and its exposure to the sun, direct or indirect.
Go by the consistency of the soil. It should be moist and loose. Stick 2/3 of your index finger into the ground to check.
4. The sun is vital for roses
At least 5 hours of sun should receive the roses a dayso the ideal is to place them in the terraces or gardens. However, if you don’t have these spaces at home, find a place near a window.
5. Pruning is necessary
You can’t skip the pruning. It may be a bit difficult, even for experts, but there is no escape. Pruning promotes healthy growth, encourages blooms, and rarely harms the plant.
In late summer or winter, pruning is very good, as it increases the vitality of the bloom for the following season. Start by pruning dead branches, flowers, and leaves.
Be careful to cut new branches, especially those that have buds and are facing out, as this is where the new blooms will come from. Once the pruning is finished It is recommended that a little healing be applied to the affected areas; this will keep fungi and insects at bay.
6. In summer provide your plant with mulch
During the season of intense sun, padding about 7 centimeters thick is ideal to prevent water from evaporating quickly. And once this breaks down, will become food for the roses.
In addition to keeping the plant at a constant temperature, the mulch inhibits the growth of weeds and can serve as a base for repellents against insects or animals.
7. When the time comes, you must transplant the rose
The roots exposed through the holes in the pot are the signal that tells you that it is time to repot.. Do this on a day when the sky is cloudy, preferably during the season when the rose is in dormant growth. You need to make sure the soil is loose.
The first thing to have on hand is a larger pot, with a good substrate. Likewise, verify that the pH is balanced or, failing that, a little acidic. Keep in mind that you can add lime to the soil if it is very acidic or sulfur if it is very alkaline.
You must leave the substrate to rest inside the pot for at least 2 days before transplanting.
Dig a deep hole in the soil of the new pot. At that point you can introduce the plant, taking care that the roots enter without problems and are loose.
Finish covering the roots and part of the stem of the roses. That being said, be sure to keep the soil moist for the first week after transplanting.
Each type of rose has a specific care
The care described is general, but you must bear in mind that, depending on the type of rose, you will need to take special precautions. Before choosing to grow one of these plants, it would be convenient to ask in a nursery which one you could have at home, taking into account the weather.
