Google joined forces with iFixit to boost pixel repairability. The technology emulated Samsung and ad that will offer spare parts for its smartphones, from the Pixel 2 to the Pixel 6 Pro. If you own one of these terminals, it means that you can buy the spare parts in iFixit and repair the mobile on your own.
The program will be activated at the end of the year and contemplates the sale of batteries, replacement screens, cameras and other components of the Pixel. The pieces will be sold separately or in iFixit Fix Kitswhich are packages that include the necessary tools to disassemble the smartphone.
Google’s repairability program also contemplates alliances with external suppliers, who will have access to tools, training, documentation and parts in the near future. Those of Mountain View confirmed that this initiative will be available in all countries where Pixels are sold.
“Improving repairability is an important way to help extend the life and usefulness of the phone,” said Ana Corrales, Director of Operations at Google’s Consumer Hardware division.
The technology company declared that its program will be extended to other devices, starting with the Chromebooks.
How easy is it to repair a Google Pixel?
Since the launch of the Pixel 3a in 2019, the company has adopted a modular design of your smartphones that allows you to replace some components. Although cchanging the battery can be easyOthers, like the charging port, are almost impossible as they are soldered to the motherboard.
“We evaluate each new Pixel model on ease of repair so we can reduce the effort, tools, parts and materials involved in the repair process.” Ana Corrales said.
Most Google Pixels have a rating of 6 on the repairability index iFixit. In very specific cases, the process of replacing a component is too complex, since it requires taking off the rear glass panel.
Google’s strategy comes at a crucial time for the company and consumers. Climate change is wreaking havoc in the world thanks to the irresponsible consumption of disposable products, such as smartphones.
Measures have already been taken in the European Union to promote the right to repair. In 2021, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs Spain approved to extend the mandatory warranty time and availability of repair parts. Companies are required to offer 3-year warranties and replacement components for up to 10 years.
Added to Google, companies like Samsung or Xiaomi will have to establish similar programs and rethink the design of their products. Although the South Koreans closed an agreement with iFixit, terminals such as the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra or Galaxy S20 Ultra are almost impossible to repair, since there is a risk of breaking some component.
