One of the objectives of constant training in the field of health is to have the knowledge to deal with all kinds of situations. The best example can be seen with a team of specialists from the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) in Chiapas. Thanks to their valuable work, it was possible to successfully withdraw a giant malignant tumor measuring 15 centimeters in diameter and had invaded the right kidney of a 30-year-old man, compromising his life.
The nephrectomy It was carried out at the Hospital General de Zona (HGZ) No. 1 “Nueva Frontera”, in Tapachula. Thanks to the timely intervention of Social Security specialists, the patient is currently recovering and reintegrating into his daily life.
Care of a rare giant tumor
The renal cortical tumor was detected in General Subzone Hospital with Family Medicine (HGSZ/MF) of Huixtla. The rightful claimant went to this place urgently, after presenting bleeding when urinating, symptom of tumor mass that the young man, a baker by trade, was unaware of suffering.
The successor Pascual Daniel “N” was referred to HGZ No. 1, where he was immediately reassessed and subjected to new studies to determine the severity of the condition and protocolized for surgery. There, the medical staff detected that he also had a low hemoglobin count, which increased the risk of undergoing surgery.
A group of specialists and personnel from the Blood Bank of HGZ No. 1 worked so that the patient received blood component transfusions and was admitted in the best conditions for the surgical procedure. The intervention was carried out by the urologist surgeon Óscar Alejandro Sánchez Balboa, assigned to HGZ No. 1
The specialist explained that when assessing the patient he was struck by the giant tumor with a dimension of 15 centimeters, which compromised the organ in its entirety. He also stressed that removal involved risks because the tumor invaded the renal vein.
“It is one of the most complex surgeries in Urology, in which a multidisciplinary team is involved. This procedure is done at HGZ No.1, in Tapachula, a hospital that has the infrastructure and trained personnel.”
Current status of the patient
The specialist reported that the entire tumor was removed, and the patient recovered in a short time, returning to his daily activities. He currently continues under medical surveillance with quarterly appointments to rule out the appearance of new tumors.
The patient commented that he was very grateful to Social Security and especially to the medical team that intervened, led by Dr. Sánchez Balboa, for their professionalism and experience, which guaranteed the success of the surgery.
Prior to the operation, Pascual Daniel “N” narrated that he spent days of anguish and concern, because his body was not suitable for surgery, but because the tumor was growing rapidly, it was urgent that he be operated on.
However, he had the support and timely attention of IMSS personnel, who stabilized him, were sensitive to the give him packages of blood components and they intervened successfullyachieving that he could recover his health and continue with his normal life next to his family.
