EFE.- Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Agents They detained 212,672 illegal immigrants at the southern border last Julyreported this Thursday the Secretary of National Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, who stressed that the figure is an “unprecedented” number in the United States.
The July figure represents a 13% increase over June and the highest figure in 20 years, the secretary said at a press conference from Brownsville, Texas.
Mayorkas revealed the figure as part of his visit to the southern border in Texas in the middle of the new increase in the number of migrants crossing the border with Mexico in an undocumented manner.
“We are finding an unprecedented number of immigrants crossing the southern border,” said the official, underlining that the majority, approximately 52%, are adults.

He explained that of the migrants detained in July, 95,788 foreigners were expelled from the United States under the Title 42 rule, which allows the expulsion of migrants for reasons of health emergency.
He warned that the expulsion to Mexico under Title 42 has caused the number of people trying to enter to increase, due to the repeated times that a migrant tries to enter.
Meanwhile 116,884 people were processed and expelled from the country expeditiously by Title 8, which allows the deportation of migrants who do not meet the eligibility requirements to stay in the country.
The numbers come amid a series of criticisms and measures taken by the governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, which has linked the rise in COVID-19 cases in the state with the increase in the number of migrants.
