“Monetary and fiscal policy must go hand in hand because they have not been. If you have a restrictive monetary policy but you are giving it fiscal policy, you are creating a complex situation,” said Ana Botín during the XX Santander Latin America Meeting.
The banker said that in the medium term we must seek to unlock investment to achieve growth.
“If the government borrows too much and has unhealthy public accounts, there is no room for private investment or there is less room (…) Healthy public policies are necessary for everything else,” he added.
The businesswoman highlighted Mexico as one of the countries with healthy public finances and the work of the Bank of Mexico (Banxico) to contain inflation.

“The central banks have been very committed to the inflation objective, especially in Latin America like Brazil or Mexico, they have been ahead of the Europeans and the Americans, which is commendable,” he said.
