The late winter of recent weeks does not make the hottest areas of Spain forget that temperatures will soon rise again, a lot. If the trend of recent years continues, there are many regions that they will suffer the heat long before summer officially opens, and that represents a serious problem for populations vulnerablelike children.
While there is fruitless debate about whether schedules should be adapted to heat waves, hundreds of schools They are not prepared to face the very high temperatures that they sometimes experience in their facilities, when the summer holidays are still weeks away.
They know it well in, for example, Andalusia, when in the middle of the month of May, or even April, attending class normally can be complicated and even dangerous for health of the little ones, and also of the teachers and the rest of the workers. Because they are not only sitting at desks; Gym classes, games and sports activities require extra effort when the heat exceeds reasonable limits.
Tired of having to deal with this problem, and given the lack of solutions from the authorities, in the Christopher Columbus public school from El Puerto de Santa María have decided to take matters into their own hands: financing the air conditioning with tortilla sandwiches.
The Association of Mothers and Fathers of Students (AMPA), teachers and the students themselves collaborate to make and sell sandwiches of potato omelette on Fridays at the school itself, at a price of 1 euro for the small one and 1.50 euros for the large one. The sale is made through a system of tickets that go on sale the days before, so you only have to redeem the lunch at the end of the week through a shift system.
Thus they hope to soon collect the 300 euros for the air conditioning unit that they want to install in the center's gym and assembly hall, where many activities take place in addition to physical education classes. Although the center was renovated a few years ago by installing double-glazed windows to better isolate the interior, the gym was left out of the work.
