The oil company kept the operations of the pipeline, which supplies the Monterrey metropolitan area and some surrounding municipalities with gasoline from the United States, paralyzed for almost four years, after it decided to close it during the first months of the six-year term.
But now, three months after putting it into operation, the state company reports losses of around 50% of what it transports in the asset, according to the sources.
The oil company transports around 4,000 barrels of gasoline per day import to the Cadereyta storage terminal. The sources explain that about half of the fuel is stolen via clandestine intakes.
The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The sources did not specify when the company will close the pipeline. Federal government figures place Tamaulipas as the fourth state with the most clandestine taps, after Hidalgo, the State of Mexico and Puebla. Since the beginning of the six-year term, the presidential administration has made fighting the fight against huachicoleo one of the main objectives.
In the first months of 2019, it implemented a strategy to stop theft, which as a first step included the closure of at least six pipelines in the center and west of the country. The latest information from the presidency says that fuel theft has decreased by 92% during the six-year term, from 72,000 to 5,600 barrels per day.
