Last June OnePlus definitely merged with OPPO, although they were always within the same group. The objective, as indicated, was “to further integrate the resources and human teams of both companies”, operating both firms independently, but more hand in hand than ever.
The first notable change came at the software level: OxygenOS is now based on ColorOS and, next year, there will be no sign of either layer. Instead, a new operating system will be created (customization layer, really) with the code of both unified. Of course, from OnePlus they promise The Verge that the new system will be “clean, fast and fluid”.
A new operating system from the OPPO / OnePlus group is coming
In an interview with Pete Lau by Verge, the CEO states, firstly, that there will be no OnePlus 9T this year. The OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro will be the high-end of OnePlus for this year, without a T revision. It is the first time, since the OnePlus 3T exists, that the company renounces this family.
In 2022 we will see a new layer of personalization that will be shared by both OPPO and OnePlus. They will remain “independent” brands, but will share software code
The most relevant here, in addition to giving up the T family, are the changes at the software level. OxygenOS and ColorOS are going to merge completely, to create “a new embedded operating system”. The goal is to keep it fast and clean as OxygenOS, along with the security and smart features of ColorOS.
It is expected that In 2022 the first high-end of OnePlus arrives, launching this operating system and that, throughout the year, it will arrive through updates to the rest of OnePlus devices.
This shouldn’t be a big surprise since, since the last versions of OxygenOS, we have been seeing how it is gradually moving away from native Android, to add differences at the interface and functionalities level.
