Of the 405,000 specimens collected, the Omicron variant was detected in 291,000 cases, while the Delta, which dominated much of the pandemic in 2021, was only present in 28% of the analyzes of the last 30 days (113,000), underlined the report.

Other variants designated as “concerning” by the WHO, such as gamma and alpha, account for less than 0.1% of samples taken.
The Omicron variant is causing record numbers of infections globally, although this has not been accompanied by an increase in deaths, so in principle it seems associated with less severe forms of COVID-19.
The WHO, however, maintains its warnings and recommendations to avoid contracting the disease, since the exponential increase in infections in most regions has added pressure to health networks, although this time more to primary care centers than to hospitals.
