In Mexico, the Pegasus software was used during the administration of Enrique Peña Nieto, according to the investigation of multiple media, however, it is not yet clear if this spyware has stopped being used, since the National Institute of Transparency, Access to the Information and Protection of Personal Data (INAI) reported that the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) has not bought it.
According to the INAI, all the information related to the use of spyware in the country is veiled, since the FGR has an investigation folder in process on the case and, therefore, the evidence cannot be altered.
“(The FGR) stated that it is not possible to establish measures and / or techniques to uninstall the Pegasus software, since this would contravene and violate the actions of the Public Ministry that is investigating facts in its competence,” the INAI revealed .
Rosa Icela Rodríguez, Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, reported that during Peña Nieto’s administration, different agencies signed 31 contracts with companies linked to the NSO Group, which amounted to 1,900 million pesos to use the program. In addition, more than 61 million dollars were used for the acquisition of software, hardware, the database, licenses and maintenance.
