Netflix announced a price increase in Europe in August 2021. The basic plan of the streaming platform would cost 8.99 euros, the most complete subscription would touch 18 euros per month. 17.99 specifically. Spain, at that time, was out of the climbs. Now, two months later, Netflix arrives with the bad news: prices in Spain are equal to those of the rest of Europe.
The streaming movies and series company raises its rates, therefore, between two and one euros for all plans. The most basic only increase one euro, from 7.99 euros to 8.99. They are, however, the higher plans those that are more affected with a more pronounced rise. Probably also the most used for the coverage of several screens simultaneously: 2 in the Standard format and 4 in the Premium. The latter, in addition to the multi-devices –necessary to share the account–, includes the option of games and the ultra HD option.
These Netflix price hikes are already clever within the streaming platform. That is, new users you can see the new rates when registering. Those who are already registered will have to wait until October 18. At which point Netflix will inform all its users of the official price increase. That is, most likely, your next payment to the platform will already be recorded with the new prices.
This rise by the queen of streaming platform comes at a very complex time for the sector. Netflix is, by far –and with the exception of Movistar + in Spain–, the most expensive platform of all available. With the widest catalog of all available, which will soon be joined by the games that Netflix has recently invested in, the truth is that the quality of the content itself has been a matter of debate. With honorable exceptions, such as The Squid Game or Sex Education that are already successes of the platform, the rest of the contents are lackluster compared to those of other platforms.
Quantity instead of quality: this is the mantra that Netflix seems to have chosen from all the options. Unlike HBO, or HBO Max that will be released on October 26, Amazon or Disney. The latter also playing the quality card, but fueled by the large number of studios that the factory concentrates: the classics of Disney, Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar or Star. Raising Netflix prices, despite relying on the strength and weight of the service, is a risky move in a time when competition is enormous in the sector.
In any case, the rise in Netflix prices is hidden precisely in the content. According to the company, this increase is necessary in order to continue feeding the catalog of novelties with exclusive and successful content. Also to be able to continue with the growth of a platform that, like the rest, played with the trick of the reduced price to conquer the largest number of users in its first years. A marketing classic.
