Inflation affects the mobile market
Although smartphones are often some of the most popular devices in the world of technology, 1.21 billion smartphones will ship in 2022, the lowest annual figure since 2013, according to IDC and Counterpoint.
The last quarter of the year was extremely important for these data to be given, since it is usually a period in which users renew their equipment; however, “weakened demand and high inventory caused vendors to slash shipments,” said Nabila Popal, IDC research director.
Although shipments do not equate to sales, since these are devices that companies like Apple or Samsung send to retailers and mobile phone operators, they do give an indication of demand in the market.
Consumers, then, demanded fewer smartphones, due to concerns about inflation and economic uncertainties. “We’ve never seen holiday quarter shipments below this.” In total, the companies shipped 300 million phones.
Despite this, Motorola is one of the favorites of Mexicans. According to The CIU figures, the company has managed to position itself as the favorite among users and it is because of them that it leads the race of equipment sold in the country since 2021.
