Sony’s Spider-Man Universe welcomes one of the characters that walks the line between good and evil, Morbius, the living vampire, making his big screen debut in a film that will We bring your review and criticism, free of spoilers.
Before starting the Morbius review, let’s remember that this film underwent a large number of adjustments to its release date, changes caused by the Covid pandemic that has affected the planet since March 2020.
After two years of waiting, the film directed by Daniel Espinosa finally arrives in theaters, presenting Morbius, a character who debuted in the comics on the pages of The Amazing Spider-Man #101 (October, 1971).
The line between good and evil
The film introduces us to Doctor Michael Morbius, who from an early age suffers from a rare blood disorder that prevents him from walking normally, rather than leaning on canes. This disease also suffers from Lucien, a teenager who becomes Michael’s best friend, and is the one who finances his research.
Morbius has achieved develop artificial blood that has saved lives, something that leads him to win the Nobel Prize in Medicine, which he declines, since he considers that this advance was an erroneous experiment.
Convinced that the DNA of the vampire bat is the key to curing his condition, Morbius elaborates a formula, which not only leads him to improve his condition, but also leads him to become a vampire, a being that needs to feed on human blood.
This advance also interests Lucien, who becomes a greater threat than Morbuis himself, who, in the style of Doctor Jekill and Mr Hyde, with a touch of Nosferatu, must do the right thing before losing his scruples.
What happened to Morbius?
Morbius’s origin story for the movies works, but the plot slowly dilutes the thrill of seeing the living vampire, leaving us with a predictable movie without a new offering for fans. The filmmaker did not dare to exploit the natural horror of Morbius.
But this could lead to the start of a multi-part storyline that leads to a showdown with Spider-Man (who looks set to be Andrew Garfield’s version of Morbius and other villains).
Some lapses of the plot seem endless and even remind us of other movies, especially that of a certain dark knight of the Distinguished Competition. In addition, Sony returns to treating a Marvel villain or antihero as a hero, as happened with Venom.
The cast led by Jared Leto does its job well, but the plot doesn’t help them better exploit their histrionic abilities. Special mention goes to Matt Smith in the role of Lucien, who delivers a villain who walks Morbuis on the fine line of right and wrong.
Verdict
To correct this review, Morbius has good performances and convincing special effects, but the plot does not explode as fans would like, which leaves it below expectations.
Like any good Marvel movie, Morbius has two post-credits scenes, which could confuse the audience by mixing some of the Spider-Man Universes that were previously seen.
