Signatories include Disney heiress and philanthropist Abigail Disney; former leaders of Romania, Croatia, the Czech Republic and Bulgaria; United States Senator Bernie Sanders; US Representative Brendan Boyle; current and former European Parliamentarians including Aurore Lalucq; artists like Brian Eno and Richard Curtis; the former president of the UN General Assembly, María Espinosa; and economists such as Gabriel Zucman, Jayati Ghosh, Kate Raworth, Jason Hickel, Lucas Chancel, and Thomas Piketty.
The enormous accumulations of extreme wealth by the wealthiest individuals are “an economic, ecological and human rights disaster” that “threatens political stability around the world,” they say.
Morris Pearl, Chairman of the Patriotic Millionaires and former Managing Director of BlackRock, said that “the widening gap between rich and poor has destabilized the global economy, exacerbated the rise of extremist politics and eroded the very fabric of our social order. As an ultra-rich person, representing an organization of like-minded wealthy people, I call on the G20 to tax us.”
Oxfam Mexico’s Research Director, Carlos Brown, highlighted that “until now, in Mexico no political leader or billionaire has signed this proposal to curb inequality.
“We are still waiting for revolutionary billionaire people, willing to put the welfare of our country above greed and unnecessary accumulation,” he said.
