EFE.- The 2021-2022 season for shrimp capture in Mexico in the coastal fishing areas of the Pacific Ocean began this Wednesday after a closed period of almost 6 months, reported the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader).
The corresponding agreement was published in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF) on September 8, based on the talks held with the sector and the opinion of the National Institute of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Inapesca).
In a statement, the National Aquaculture and Fisheries Commission (Conapesca) recalled that the agreement “establishes that as of its publication the temporary closure is lifted” in the lagoon-estuarine systems of Bahía Magdalena-Almejas in the state of Baja California Sur, and those corresponding to the state of Nayarit ”.
Meanwhile, the fishing activity begins at 00:00 on September 14, 2021 in the lagoon-estuarine systems, marshes and bays located in the center-north and south of the states of Sinaloa, Sonora, Jalisco and Colima.
In addition, it was indicated that the activity begins at 6 a.m. on September 21, 2021 in marine waters under federal jurisdiction of the Pacific Ocean, from the border with the United States, including the Gulf of California, to the limits with the Republic of Guatemala.
The report indicated that on April 26, the agreement was published in the DOF that announced that as of 6:00 p.m. on September 15, the shrimp capture begins in the area that extends from the border with the United States in Tamaulipas, to the mouth of the Coatzacoalcos River, Veracruz, where the predominant species is coffee.
It also specifies that from 6:00 p.m. on September 15, “fishermen can begin their activity in the coastal strip in front of the states of Campeche and Tabasco for the seven barbas shrimp fishery. The start of capture highlights the same for the area of Contoy, Quintana Roo ”.

Sader pointed out that the establishment of closed periods for the shrimp fishery “is one of the main management measures that contributes to protecting the maximum periods of reproduction and recruitment of the resource.”
In addition, he said that the use of shrimp on the coast of the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of California has generated the establishment of commercial fisheries of particular economic and social importance.
