In Mexico, international private companies are the most prepared to operate under the Emissions Trading System, said José Ramón Ardavín, executive director of the Commission for Private Sector Studies for Sustainable Development (CESPEDES), during his speech in Mexico Carbon Forum 2023.
Ardavín explained that this is the result of the fact that these types of international companies have become familiar with the trade process of countries that already have this system, such as Europe or Canada; however, there is a lot of work to be done with small and medium-sized businesses.
“Companies that are already listed in other markets have very valuable experience, but companies that are not yet listed in any market have to know these capabilities, I believe that specialized consultancies can help a lot in determining the cost curve,” added the executive director of CESPEDES.
To reduce these gaps, Ibette Sosa, Holcim’s corporate environmental manager, explained that it is necessary to put on the table the standardization of criteria between the Federal Trade System and the emission reduction mechanisms that are taking place at the state level, because there are accounting deficiencies and environmental criteria, since the prices are different and different emission scopes are measured.
“These differences put us in competitive problems from one state to another when it comes to marketing our own products, which can cause different schemes on the price of coal and could begin to be visualized in the excessive costs that occur in some states” Sosa commented.
Holcim’s environmental manager said she was pleased that now those responsible for the Federal Environment Secretariat suggest that consistency between the calculation methodologies is necessary, but also everything that has to do with the criteria, approaching the industry to identify the context and put tools at hand to study how to generate these environmental abatement curves.
