Meta wants to dethrone ChatGPT and develop its own chatbot based on a language model more powerful than GPT-4. According to her, she has revealed The Wall Street Journal, the company plans to start training this AI in early 2024 with the goal of launching a free alternative to OpenAI. It is, however, something that does not make special sense.
For the moment, and as stated in the aforementioned medium, Meta has been acquiring Nvidia chips intended for artificial intelligence tasks. Specifically, Nvidia H100 GPUs, which will be used to train the model that aims to surpass GPT-4. The company led by Mark Zuckerberg will also not depend on Azure, Microsoft’s cloud computing services, to work on its AI. Instead, they have opted to strengthen their infrastructure and created a new team dedicated to this at the beginning of this year.
At the moment, there are no more details about the Meta AI model that aims to surpass GPT-4, from OpenAI. The company, however, has been working on new artificial intelligence products for months after the popularity of ChatGPT, and Microsoft also jumped on the bandwagon with the Bing chatbot and its AI-powered search.
Meta, yes, is working on something that doesn’t make much sense. According to reports, we reiterate, the company plans to train its language model in early 2024. And although a few months ago Sam Altan, CEO of OpenAI, detailed that the company was not training GPT-5, and that it will not be able to do so “for a while”, early next year could be an ideal date to start working in the new version of its powerful AI. This would leave Meta at least in second place, even if its chatbot is more powerful than GPT-4.
Additionally, Meta is not the only company working on new AI products. Recent reports revealed that Apple is investing millions of dollars a day in artificial intelligence, and more specifically, in a chatbot more powerful than ChatGPT. The Cupertino firm has named it internally as Ajax GPT, and it has been trained with more than 200 billion parameters, which makes it an alternative to the OpenAI chatbot.
At the moment, however, the Apple product is only available to a limited number of employees. It also doesn’t look like the company will announce an alternative to ChatGPT anytime soon. Meta, instead, plans to make its chatbot more powerful than GPT-4 available for free to everyone.
