Mercedes has created the EQG, an electric variant that, as was already known, we would one day see in action. Would you buy this version or would you still enjoy the previous one?
In the car market, there are models that should never go away. Either because of what they mean for a certain company, what it has caused in the user for decades or, of course, the qualities it possesses compared to its competition, there are cars that have managed to overcome difficulties and, above all, changes in trends in the sector.
Taking a quick look at the industry, we can see how many examples there are in this regard. Who does not know a Volkswagen Beetle? And a Jeep Wrangler? As you can see, they are iconic models who have known deal with new consumption patterns. Electrification will be a tough litmus test and, not surprisingly, some of the key models will go out of production one of these days.
Mercedes has presented in society the prototype of its most iconic off-road vehicle
One of the models that has most aroused the debate for what it represents for the signing of the Star is the G-Class. What to do with one of the best SUVs that exist since its first appearance? To understand the history of this amazing product, you have to go back to the first units of the 1970s. Since then, his image has always been very recognizable.
Everything seemed to indicate that the standardization of mechanics based on batteries and electric motors would end this proposal, but the truth is that the first prototype in this regard has just been presented. Its name is EQG and, without a doubt, has been one of the options that has attracted the most attention of the public. After all, it is a one-of-a-kind model.
Let’s see, therefore, what are the main qualities that are known in this regard, why we are facing a variant that can mark an era in the alternative motor industry and, of course, what rumors are spilling about it in relation to this particular model. And you, would you continue to support the classic versions or has the time come to jump to the electric motor?
EQG, an acronym that shows the work done on the G-Class
The first thing that should be noted is that, contrary to what has happened on previous occasions, Mercedes has respected the unmistakable image of the conventional version. Its square shapes, with the arrival of the electric variant, they would hardly undergo major modifications. This makes us rethink to what extent it will be an efficient alternative in terms of battery consumption.
On an aesthetic level, the same approach that has always attracted the attention of the classic G-Class is maintained. This has not happened in other models of the electric range of the German firm. The clearest example is shown by the EQS, which has been created without being based on the S-Class range, the option framed within the segment of representative sedans and that identifies the firm so much.
The IAA Mobility 2021, the event that has served to know this new electric version, has witnessed the presentation. Nevertheless, not much information has been provided in this regard. Therefore, you have to play a little with your imagination. Even more considering the possible battery arrangements. Of course, the inclusion of the same battery pack as the EQS is valued.
Now, why is it too early to affirm this proposal? It is important to bear in mind that the EQS has a battery with a capacity of 107.8 kWh, as can be read in the specialized portal InsideEV’s. The problem appears from the moment it is known that this battery size fits the saloon because the whole block has been created adapting to it. This is not the case for the EQG, as the bodywork has been created to match the classic G-Class.
A version that will undoubtedly come from the capabilities of the electric motor
Among other qualities, the EQG stands out, above all, for having a great balance in terms of body angles. This allows to avoid obstacles in a simple way thanks, in addition, to its incredible endowment of technological resources. However, the electric motor would also serve to create an additional solution. The provision of the maximum possible torque from standstill will be very relevant.
As it is a prototype, it is expected that there will be changes in the coming months. If, finally, its production is confirmed, it will be understood that its body will introduce some other modification. However, even more so in this peculiar model, will retain much of the expected details aesthetically.
And you, would you bet on this variant more typical of the 21st century or, on the contrary, do you think the internal combustion version is better? We will have to wait to see what happens in the coming months. In this way, new details about the technology that incorporates and, of course, its entry into the production chain.
