State of exception in El Salvador
The Legislative Assembly of El Salvador approved the emergency regime for a month on March 27, at the request of President Nayib Bukele, in an attempt to stop the actions of the Mara Salvatrucha gang, responsible for at least 76 homicides in two days.
The measure consists of the deployment of more soldiers and police officers on the streets who will now operate protected by a legal package that expands their margin of action, so that in the first hours of implementing the measure the number of detainees increased.
In addition to this extraordinary measure, the Legislative Assembly approved for Bukele the toughening of sentences for gang members and endorsed judging adolescents as adults.
The congress suspendedat the request of Bukele and without any study or parliamentary discussion, various constitutional rights, including the right to defense during legal proceedings and inviolability of telecommunications.
