The design review that Google introduced with Android 12 began its deployment to the Pixels with the beta, but it will not stay on the company’s mobiles: Google has updated the Android AOSP schedule to advance the introduction of Material You. This implies that the automatic customization of the interface can be used on any other mobile.
Changing the wallpaper is a common gesture that we usually perform on our mobile phones. This change only changes the appearance of the desktops and / or the lock screen, but everything can change if you have Android 12 and a Google Pixel: this version, which includes Material You, can adapt the color of menus and icons to the tones of the wallpaper. Don’t have a Pixel? You will surely end up enjoying Material You on your mobile.
Google will introduce Material You in Android 12.1 AOSP
Android is an operating system that has different distributions depending on whether it is certified or not. Google allows brands to use the system together with their apps and services if they agree to certify mobiles; While distributes its line of Pixel devices with certain exclusive settings. Separately, Google maintains Android AOSP, the system version that is completely open source. Anyone can modify it at will.
Given that Material You, the revision of the design bases introduced by Google, at the moment was exclusive to the Pixels, the most logical thing was to think that automatic customization, internally referred to as “monet”, would remain on company phones. But it will not be like that: as they discovered in XDA Developers, the development of Android AOSP will include Material You as one of the features to implement.
According to sources consulted by XDA, Google would have introduced the automatic personalization “monet”, the most striking feature of Material You, in the development of the first update of Android 12, the rumored 12.1. Since Material You is on the way to being released as open source, this would make “monet” and its features available to any manufacturer; with the door open to include it in the respective manufacturing layers, whether or not they are certified by Google.
As a test, In XDA Developers they managed to activate the automatic customization of Material You in Android AOSP 12.1. The screenshots show how the system menus and the interface backgrounds vary depending on the wallpaper changes, a function that should end up reaching any Android device.
