Al-Watan’s tweet referred to “press reports” according to which Qatari businessman Sheikh Jassim’s offer for the club had been a “success”. The reports were not identified.
The tweet was posted at 9:41 p.m. Qatar time on Monday and was quoted by international newspapers including the Daily Mail.
Both the Qatari authorities and Manchester United were not available to comment on the bidding process.
Sheikh Jassim and Ineos director Jim Ratcliffe are vying for control of Manchester United, currently owned by the Glazer family. Earlier this month, Jassim submitted his fifth and final offer for the club.
At the last closing, the company was valued at 3.280 million dollars and, if the increases prior to the opening of the market continue, it would add 535 million dollars to its market capitalization, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
