Will the capital’s Zócalo change its name? This is what is known
Can you imagine the Zócalo with another name? Well, a proposal by Senator Mónica Fernández Balboa, from Morena, seeks to modify the current official name of the “Plaza de la Constitución” by “Plaza de la Constitución de los Estados Unidos Mexicanos de 1824”.
But will change be possible? Well, everything points to yes. The point of agreement was approved on April 24 by the Senate Governance Commission, this with 13 votes in favor and one abstention from the PAN senator, Alfredo Botello.
This Wednesday, the head of government of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, declared that the Legal Department and the Secretary of Government are analyzing the proposal to see if the change is appropriate.
And apparently the heat stirred up the desire to change names, because on April 19, in the Congress of Mexico City, it was also suggested to the general director of the Metro collective transport system, Guillermo Calderón, to change the name of the Indios station. Greens of line 3, and consider replacing it with “Mexica Emperors”, since, according to arguments, the expression “Indian” is considered discriminatory.
Thus, these proposals are added to the name changes that the capital government made in 2021, when Avenida Puente de Alvarado was renamed Calzada México-Tenochtitlan, while the Metrobús station on Line 4, from ” Puente de Alvarado” was renamed “Mexico Tenochtitlán” and the Metro Line 2 station with exits to the Plancha de la Constitución stopped being called Zócalo, to be called Zócalo-Tenochtitlán”.
